How Great Thou Art

O Lord, My God.

When I, in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds Thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder.  Thy power throughout the universe is displayed.

Then sings my soul, my Savior, God, to Thee: “How great Thou art!  How great Thou art!”

Then sings my soul, my Savior, God, to Thee: “How great Thou art!  How great Thou art!”

I worship you, Jesus.  You are my King, therefore I yield to You because You have redeemed me.  I have been bought.  You bought me.  We have a saying that ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’  In this world, the amount someone pays for something determines its value.  This is why my heart reels when I look at what You paid for me.  You paid Your very life.

You own all the power that exists in the universe.  You chose to compress all that power into the form of a newborn baby who relied on His parents for His every need.  You then grew to adulthood in the same way Your human creations grow to adulthood.  You kept Your power compressed inside Your human body, and when the fullness of time came,  according to Your plan for this universe, You voluntarily sacrificed it. You bore every single lash of the whip, punch in the face, yank of Your beard off Your face, every slime of spit on Your face.  Even though You could have ended the torture with a single word, You felt every thorn beat into Your skull, every nail pinning You to the Roman cross, every agonizing breath You had to labor for while You hung there, waiting for Your body to die.

This is what You paid.  The amount someone pays for something determines it’s value.  Paul told the Corinthian church that Your followers have been bought.  Peter told Your followers what we were bought with: Your blood.  John the Baptizer identified You as the unblemished Lamb that Jehovah Jireh provided.   Unblemished Lamb?  Bought with blood? Why, and provided for what?

Atonement.

Jesus, when I, in awesome wonder, consider this universe You have made, my soul sings to You, “How great Thou art! How great Thou art!”

By Your immutable authority over what You have created, You established Law.  The back story of why You decided to create in the first place and why Law was needed is also staggeringly awesome.  (Reader, listener, that needs a separate post! Hint: Light and dark cannot exist in the same space.)

Ultimately, though, this is Your universe and You make the rules.  Law exists.  Justice demands that crimes against Law must, MUST, be atoned for.  That’s what ‘punishment’ is.  Atonement.  There is only one atonement, one single atonement accepted as payment for crimes against the Law of Your universe.  Blood.  In Your universe, blood = life.  Blood is our only true possession.  We own not one single thing except our blood- not even the air in our lungs is ours.  A human without blood is not a human.  It’s just a sculpture, which is not alive.  Because justice demands that crimes must be punished, i.e., paid for, the only thing we possess to pay with is our life.

This is where my head starts spinning.  You compressed all of Your existence into a human body.  Why in the world would you do that?  To provide a substitute: the blood in Your body, which felt pain just as real as we do… for our blood. Merriam-Webster: Substitute, /ˈsəbstəˌto͞ot/: a person who takes the place of another.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, King of the Universe who loves like no other.

What other motivation could there be for such an action?  Adonai, You made us.  Oh, Hallowed be Your Name! You are the reason we exist.  You did not make us because You were lonely.  You made us because You are good.  You made us because You are love.  Love- as in the noun.  You are love itself.  You invented the concept of love as a verb.

Jesus, when I, in awesome wonder, consider this universe You have made, my soul sings to You, “How great Thou art! How great Thou art!”

We understand the concept of what sacrificial love looks like.  Among other things, “sacrificial love” often brings to mind a heroic person taking a bullet for someone.  This is how You bought me/us/Your followers.  It was a staggering example of sacrificial love.  The amount someone pays for something determines its value.  To what end would You pay such a monumental price?

So that we can know You.

That’s how good You are.  Being Love itself, You set Your entire plan in motion so that You, Love with a capital L, could be known.  (If a father’s love for his child fills his own heart to bursting, but he does not show it to his child in any way, shape, or form, what good is that to his child?)

When we know You, Love, how do we respond?  We love You back.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, King of the Universe who loves like no other.
